
History of Kerala:
Original inhabitants were animists, followed by the Dravidians. After
Alexander's triumphant sweep over Asia Minor, the ports of Kerala became
a link between the Middle East, the Mediterranean and China.
In 1498, Vascoda Gama made his historic landing on the Malabar Coast.
In 1723, the East India Company signed a strategic treaty with King
MarthandaVarma. For a few decades, Hyder Ali and his son -Tipu sultan
proved to be a thorn in the flesh of the British, sweeping down several
times into Kerala. In 1947, it was the turn of the British to pack their
bags.

There is a persistent legend which says that Parasuram, the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu Trinity, stood on a high place in the mountains, threw an axe far in to the sea, and commanded the sea to retreat. And the land that emerged all from the waters became Kerala, the land of plenty and prosperity.

Kanikkonna or golden-shower tree is a shrub (Cassia fistula; family Fabaceae); it is the State of Kerala’s official flower, as the name denotes its flowers are golden-yellow and grown in long pendent inflorescence. The ‘golden shower tree’ produces flowers early and considered as a clarion-call of the arrival of Vishu or Vaishakh a festival of flowers (golden flowers of this plant is used to adorn the image of Lord Krishna on the day of Vishu and shown to children as the first sight of the day for Vishu). A fully blown golden shower tree is a treat to the eye of the beholder and the fallen petals on the ground gives it the name ‘golden-shower’ tree.

The Kerala Elephants are an integral part of the daily life in Kerala, India. These Indian elephants are loved, revered, groomed and given a prestigious place in the state’s culture. Elephants in Kerala are often referred to as the ‘sons of the sahya.’ As the state animal, the elephant is featured on the emblem of the Government of Kerala.

Great Hornbill, Buceros bicornis also known as Greater Indian Hornbill,
Great Pied Hornbill and Two-horned Calao, is the largest member of the
hornbill family. Great Hornbill is distributed in the forests of India,
the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, Indonesia. Their impressive size and
colour have helped make them a part of local tribal cultures and
rituals. The Great Hornbill is long-lived with a lifespan approaching 50
years in captivity.
